2022 CS:GO 5v5 Greybox Contest

Welcome to the 2022 Source Engine Discord CS:GO 5v5 Greybox Contest! That’s right, this time we are only looking for the greatest layout you can come up with! In addition to that, we want you to work by yourself.

Previous contests in the community have included the whole shebang, art and all. This time, we don’t care about that. This contest is exclusively a showcase of your ability to design layouts for the bomb defusal mode in CS:GO!

For information on anything not covered on this page (or for anything else related to the contest) make sure to join our Discord server: https://discord.gg/SourceEngine

Rules

  1. The level is a fully playable 5v5 bomb defusal map for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  2. This level must have at least 5 WORKING spawns for each teams, including buyzones
  3. The level must have exactly 2 bombsites
  4. Each entry can only have one author/creator (i.e. work by yourself!)
    1. Recreating someone else’s map from any other media is also thus NOT allowed
  5. Each person can only submit ONE entry
  6. The level is fully clipped (movement on stairs is smooth, no extremely easy out-of-bounds exploits (can’t easily accidentally get out of the map), etc)
  7. Prior to the start of this contest, any version of the level was not publicly playtested (Contest started @ January 10, 2022 at 11:00am Central Standard Time)
    1. This also means you can’t remake a map that was previously publicly playtested in any form, or was released as part of a different game, even if you made it.
  8. The level has a fully functional and accurate radar (ALL radar levels are packed)
  9. Any custom textures used are fully packed into the map
  10. The only props allowed in the level are ladders or doors (or doorframes!)
  11. All submissions must be entered by: March 31, 2022 at 11:59:59pm Central Standard Time
    1. Updating your workshop submission after the deadline is NOT ALLOWED until the judging period has concluded (timespan TBA depending on number of entries). Updating the workshop submission during this period will result in disqualification.

Judging Criteria

  • How fun do we think the map is?
  • Does the layout exemplify game-ready quality?
  • Do we feel the areas flow together well and compliment each other?
    • i.e. if both bombsites are essentially the exact same layout, we wouldn’t really classify those as “complimenting” each other
  • How much do new and refreshing ideas contribute to the fun factor?
    • Note: This doesn’t necessarily mean “gimmicks”
  • We aren’t judging art at all here, but that doesn’t mean your level should have lighting so dark its hard to see other players, or anything else that would adversely affect our ability to playtest your level

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What props in specific are allowed and why?

A: The only props allowed are any that would qualify as a door (or doorframe!) or ladder. We decided this because we don’t really want you to use props as a crutch to your level. Ladders and doors are specifically allowed because they are often just the best tool for those gameplay mechanics.

Q: Why can I only submit one entry?

A: Two reasons. We want you to spend time and submit your absolute best, and it would be impossible for us to judge if everyone submitted two entries.

Q: Can I add greybox “art”?

A: Yes, as long as you don’t use props. We however won’t judge your level on it.

Q: Can I use “x” texture?

A: You are allowed you use any texture you wish. The only real restriction is that we don’t want you to use props

Q: Can I update my workshop entry after submitting it?

A: Yes, as long as you don’t update after the deadline. Once we announce the results of the contest, you are free to update your submission.
